How did it start?
The result of a dream to revolutionize the online sales market in Latin America, Mercado Livre was conceived at Stanford University in 1999. Marcos Galperin, an MBA graduate at the time and founder of the company, worked with a group of entrepreneurs and, in August of the same year, created the online sales platform in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In Brazil, the company was opened in October 1999 by Stelleo Tolda, the company’s representative in Brazil and a member of the group that conceived the company. The Brazilian headquarters are located in Osasco and are nicknamed “Melicidade”, a combination of the abbreviation MeLi and the word happiness.
